真可惜!

   这一句不能译作:真可耻!. 如要表达此意, 应该说: Shame on you! 或For shame!
   在英语里, 有不少的常用词语, 它们的涵义往往不是其字面意义, 对于这类词语,
我们要倍加注意. 在学习过程中, 要看到一个记住一个.
   现在请仔细对照下列英语例句的正误译文:
Look out!
请注意!(不是: 看外面!)
I couldn''t care less!
我才不在乎呢! (不是: 我不能关心得少一些!)
I feel guilty.
我感到过意不去! (不是:我感到有罪!)
You are telling me!
还用你来告诉我! (不是: 你正在告诉我!)
That is neither here nor there.
这件事无关重要. (不是: 它既不在这里也不在那里)
I don''t buy your story.
我不相信你的话. (不是:我不买你的故事书.)
Hold it! I''ve got something to say.
且慢! 我有话要说. (不是:拿住它! 我有话要说.)
Mr. Bumble is a busy-body .

   现在让我们回到shame这个字. <格林童话>(Fairy Tales)里有这么一个句子:
   It will be a great shame not to eat them soon when they are just in the gravy.
   这里的shame也是作可惜解, 故此句译作:如果不趁它们渗满油汁的时候马上吃掉, 真是太可惜了!

   shame在下面两句中也是作可惜解:
   It is a shame you''re going -- just at this time in spring when everything is going nice.
   Many students never improve. They get no advice and therefore they keep
repeating the same mistakes. It''s a terrible shame!

   从上述各例可见, 望文生义是理解和翻译的大忌. 现在从下列两例以说明
甚至大词典的编者也会犯这种错误. <英华大词典>给英语单词clearway的解释是:
(立体交叉,限制进入,保证畅通的)超高速公路; 无独有偶, 另一本上海出版的大辞典为clearway所作的解释是:
(禁止停车和行人进入的)超高速公路. 其实, clearway是英国英语, 它并不是 motorway(高速公路),
它只是当汽车出现故障不宜继续行驶时方可驶入停车的一段道路, 这种道路, 我们姑且把它称为遇障停车路段,
因为至今尚未在哪一本英汉词典上看到有它的恰当译名.
