Chinanews, Beijing, Apr.1 – From 2002 to 2006, the Ministry of Public Security cracked 2.09 million gambling cases, with 7.79 million people arrested and 20.73 billion yuan of gambling money confiscated, the Ministry of Public Security announced recently.

Over the past five years, local public security bureaus in cooperation with other departments have put great efforts in the fight against cross-border gambling, online gambling, and illegal lottery selling.

In 2005, under the guidance of the Ministry of Public Security, local public security bureaus in China launched large campaigns against gambling activities. As a result of such campaigns, cross-border gambling activities were curbed, 30 foreign gambling branches in China closed down, and 19 underground banks destroyed. 102 foreign casinos set at the areas bordering China were forced to close their business. In addition, Chinese police also gave a heavy blow to online gambling activities. 2,174 websites involved in online gambling were closed. Many large online gambling cases, including the “Dec 23” soccer gambling case in Beijing, were uncovered. Some companies that involved in online gambling activities, including the Baoying Company in Taiwan, were destroyed. Illegal lottery sale was also curbed.

In addition, local public security bureaus punished some senior officials and public servants who had participated in gambling activities. These included the case of Cai Haowen, head of the Transportation Management Department in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province, who used large amounts of public money for gambling activities.
