Chinas traffic accident toll highest in the world

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 16 – Statistics from the Ministry of Public Security shows that over the past decade, China's traffic accident death toll has remained the highest in the world. Last year, about 89,000 people died in car accidents, averaging 200-300 people every day, a figure higher than the related figure in the United States, although the latter has far more cars than China, the Beijing Daily reported.

In order to drag down the high death rate, China plans to improve the road facilities. Recently, the China Highway Transportation Society announced that they plan to upgrade the sand barrels and concrete mounds, which will provide a cushion when cars hit against them, with better facilities called bumping prevention railings. With this new facility, it is hoped that the death toll resulting from car accidents can be reduced to the minimum.

The bumping prevention railings are small in size. They take up only 0.1% of the road construction costs. The railings will be installed in the highway's blocking area. When a car hits on the front, the railings can cushion the hitting effect. When a car hits from the side, they can help it to turn back to its normal direction. If these bumping prevention railings are installed on all the highways across China, they can save the lives of 20,000 people over the next ten years.
