More than 30 million Chinese youngsters under 17 years old have psychological problems, but this hasn't drawn widespread attention from their parents, an official of the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau said on Monday.
Beijing Evening News reported that spokeswoman for the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau Deng Xiaohong said their mental problems lead to difficulties in interpersonal relationships, emotional stability and school. Deng said according to a study conducted in the capital, 32% of Beijing primary and middle school students have mental problems; but 80% of them were overlooked by schools and their parents.
Deng noted the best way to prevent psychological problems amongst teenagers lies with the family. The same survey showed that 50% of children have psychological obstruction due to their family situation, while 70% of parents do not instruct their children well.
Deng said children that have psychological problems typically tend to act anxious, are unwilling to go to school, antisocial, easy to lose their temper, silent and so on. Sometimes their problems can even manifest themselves as physical diseases.
Deng advised parents to learn more about child psychology and pay more attention to their child's intelligence level and hobbies, so they can help prevent them from developing psychological problems. If kids are already mentally ill, parents should take them to specialized hospitals as soon as possible.
