我们经常可以在媒体上看到底线一词。如某记者推测某市接收和医治SARS病人的底线是6000人。坚持一个中国原则是我们的底线。等等。如今，汉语中出现了许多新词，其中不少是外来语，那么底线一词是汉语先有的呢，还是从英语的bottom line翻译来的呢？两者有何关系？是否可以互译呢？
bottom line原义指财务帐目表上最下面的一行或那一行上写的表示盈亏的数目。英文定义是the final line on a company's accounting statement that shows profit or loss that the company makes at the end of a given period of time after everything has been calculated.
例如：1.The bottom line for 2001 was pre-tax profit of ￡ 5 million （2001年公司财务状况是税前利润500万英镑。）
2.Sales last month failed to add to the company's bottom line.（上月经销额没能使公司盈利增加。）
3.How will the rise in interest rates affect our bottom line?（利率的提高对我们的利润有何影响？）
对公司来说，盈亏是大事，所以bottom line的第二个定义是the deciding or crucial factor; the essential point in a discussion or an argument; the most important thing that one must consider or accept; the most important factor that must be accepted, however reluctantly or even you may not like it这里强调两点：一是重要，关键，二是无法回避，必须考虑或接受。
例如：4. The bottom line is that we have to increase our sales or take a cut in pay. （关键问题是我们必须增加销售额，否则就得减工资。）
5.If you don't make a profit, you go out of business: that is the bottom line.（如果不盈利，你就会破产，这是必须面对的现实。）
此外，bottom line还常表示最起码的条件可接受的最低价格等，其第三个定义是the lowest price or the lowest acceptable amount of money regarded as acceptable in a business deal.例如：6. A: What's your bottom line for selling the car? B: I can go down to ￡450.（甲：这辆车底价是多少？乙：最低450英镑。）
汉语中的底线有那些意思呢？汉语里底线原先只有两个意思。一是标示某些球类运动场地两端相对与边线（side line）的底线。但在英语里，此处不能用bottom line。篮球和足球场地的底线是back line或end line；足球球门柱之间部分是goal line；羽毛球和网球场地的底线是base line。所以，描述运动场地时，不可以用bottom line。二是指暗藏在对方内部刺探情况或进行其他活动的人，也就是常说的内线或卧底。显然这个意思与bottom line毫无关系，因此，千万不能用bottom line表示。
这里有三个例句：1.We will do all we can to relieve the symptoms of the patients and reduce fatality: that is our bottom line. 2.The city's bottom line in treating SARS patients is 6000.3.That there is but only one China in the world is our bottom line.
我们发现底线的意思在三个例句中分别为基本标准或准则，极限能力或条件，基本立场和原则。这些意思与bottom line十分接近，但在《现代汉语词典》中却查不到这些意思，因此很可能是从bottom line里转化来的。
那么，bottom line是否都能翻译成底线呢？
由于汉语的底线没有财务，利润，盈利等意思，所以第二段中前三句的bottom line不可翻译为底线。汉语中的底线已经能表示bottom line的关键，重要等意思，所以第二段中后两句可翻译为底线，但译成关键问题和必须面对的现实似乎更清楚自然。至于谈到价格，汉语里有底价一词，用在这里很合适，因此不必翻译为底线了。
